Hidden fees: existing charges that we don’t know about
There are many fees that we pay regularly without really understanding or realizing. Awareness is key to avoiding unnecessary spending and ensuring our money is used as effectively as possible. By carefully reviewing our accounts and contracts, we can make informed decisions and avoid competitive surprises in our financial lives. Therefore, it is essential to be aware of the fees we pay, even if they are not immediately obvious.
See below some existing fees that are inserted into our routine without you noticing and end up making payments that are often not mandatory and unnecessary to make your payment:
Minimum Consumption:
In environments such as bars, restaurants and nightclubs, it is essential to ensure that customers are not forced to purchase products or services that do not interest them. The consumption rate, widely known, is categorized as tying by Procon, or which is in disagreement with the rules of the Consumer Code, or which prohibits such practice.
Ticket linked to accommodation and tours:
The joint purchase of airline tickets, accommodation, tours and insurance by a single travel agency is often perceived as a practice of poor quality and abusive behavior. It is advisable to purchase only what really meets your needs.
Bank fee:
Banking institutions have been notorious for importing a variety of fees, some of which are questionable as to their legitimacy. It is crucial to understand that, according to the Consumer Protection Code, the customer is not legally obliged to bear the following administrative charges, as responsibility for them lies with the banks themselves:
Credit Opening Rate (TAC) Bill Issuance Fee (TEB) Carnet Issuance Fee (TEC) Early Settlement Fee (TLA). School fees:
Regardless of the educational level in question, requiring fees for services requested by students, such as issuing certificates, transcripts and diplomas, is considered unfair.
According to guidance from the Ministry of Education (MEC), such services must be covered by the monthly fees.
Housing fees:
In the context of housing contracts, legislation requires the inclusion of insurance. However, it is essential to emphasize that the client is not obliged to accept the security offered by the company that manages the property. You have the option to transfer your contract to another guarantee of your choice.
In relation to property financing, there is a fee called “Real Estate Technical Assistance Service”, which corresponds to 0.88% of the value of the property. This brokerage fee, which is often exaggerated, is justified as a way of covering legal expenses, but it is important to highlight that it is not mandatory. You have the right to choose not to use it.
Internet fees:
The act of requiring additional services as part of the installation of a product is, in fact, seen as a tying practice. However, the imposition of minimum fees, regardless of consumption volume, cannot be categorized as an illegal activity, as they are necessary to ensure the availability of continued use.
We must maintain constant vigilance over payments that are imposed, regardless of the declarations made by establishments. Being aware of your rights and applicable laws is one way to ensure that your administrations are well protected.
